What Skills are Needed for Screen Printing?
Screen printing requires file processing, pre-press stenciling, printing techniques and experience, operational expertise and more. This is especially true for outdoor stickers, which demand particularly high standards in material selection, stenciling, ink, and file processing.
Basic Technical Skills for Screen Printing
First, you need to understand some fundamental technical skills, such as screen frame materials, mesh count, frame tension, how to select squeegees, and how to perform registration adjustments, among other things.
Screen Frame :
Screen frames are made of wood, aluminum, and other materials. Wooden frames are suitable for manual operations, while aluminum frames are ideal for high-volume, high-precision screen printing.
Mesh Count Selection :
The lower mesh count, the thicker ink, resulting in rougher printing with larger burrs, this is suitable for white backgrounds or printing with lower quality requirements. Conversely, the higher mesh count, the thinner ink, printing is more precise without burrs, this is ideal for car decals, motorcycle decals, bicycle decals, etc., and is also compatible with CMYK screen printing.

Screen Tension Control :
The tension of the screen frame directly impacts screen printing quality. Therefore, the appropriate tension of the screen frame should be determined based on whether the sticker is printed with spot colors, four colors, or multiple colors with precise registration. For standard car sticker printing, the recommended tension range is 16-20 N/cm.
Squeegee Angle & Pressure Control:
The ideal squeegee length should exceed the printed content by 5-7 cm and be 7-10 cm shorter than the screen frame. Square-head squeegees are typically selected for their ability to apply high printing pressure while minimizing ink transfer, thereby controlling pattern precision. This makes them suitable for CMYK screen-printed truck decals, funny car decals, window stickers, logo stickers, and similar applications.
Registration Accuracy:
First, the artwork needs to be registered accurately on the screen printing frame, and the tension of the screen mesh must keep the same for each stenciling.
Prepress & Screen Making Skills
Screen printing stenciling making is an important step that directly determines the quality of your printed content, so this process must be taken care of.
Proper degreasing before coating
There is some grease or contaminants on stenciling, which directly affect the adhesion of the photosensitive emulsion. This can lead to stenciling failures or affect print quality. Therefore, the screen frame must be cleaned using a specialized degreasing agent or cleaning solution. After degreasing, the screen frame must be thoroughly dried before applying the photosensitive emulsion.
Emulsion coating thickness control
The thickness of the photosensitive emulsion depends on the printing content and the desired exposure effect. For standard emulsion thickness, applying 3 to 5 coats on both sides of the screen frame is sufficient.

Correct exposure time calculation
The distance between the screen frame and the light source, along with the intensity of the light source, determines the exposure time. The closer the distance, the shorter the exposure time; the farther the distance, the longer the exposure time. For example: at 50 cm between the screen frame and the light source, exposure requires 3 minutes; at 100 cm, exposure requires 12 minutes.
At the same distance from the light source, the stronger the light intensity, the shorter the exposure time; conversely, the weaker the light intensity, the longer the exposure time.
Pinholes inspection & retouching
After exposure and development, the screen frame must be dried and placed on the viewing stand. Inspect the image and text areas to ensure complete transparency, checking for burrs, defects, broken lines, or blocked mesh openings. If any issues are found, attempt to resolve them; if unsuccessful, the screen must be remade.
Verify that non-image areas are completely sealed. If any small openings remain unsealed, cover them with transparent tape.

Ink Knowledge & Color Control Skills
Solvent ink vs UV ink vs Water-based ink
The most commonly used ink for weatherproof stickers is solvent-based ink with dries naturally, which offers waterproof and UV-resistant properties lasting approximately 3-7 years. For simple designs with minimal color registration, UV ink can be used. However, UV screen printing machines are costly. Alternatively, adding a UV curing unit can reduce expenses.
Outdoor-grade pigments vs indoor pigments
Outdoor pigments contain UV stabilizers and antioxidants to resist ultraviolet radiation and temperature-induced brittleness.
Indoor pigments lack specialized protection and require eco-friendly, non-toxic formulations with emphasis on safety and easy cleanability.
Pantone color mixing experience
Below each PANTONE number, you’ll typically find the corresponding formula. You can directly mix custom ink according to this formula. If you don’t have the specific ink color indicated in the PANTONE color chart, you’ll need to rely on your experience and mix using existing stock inks. During the mixing process, be sure to use a milligram scale to record the formula precisely to avoid color differences in repeat orders or large orders. Remember to use the same materials for the same formula; otherwise, color variations will occur.
In summary, outdoor spot color printing inks are applied thicker than indoor printing. The CMYK gradient dots are significantly larger than indoor ones, and look not good close but vibrant from a distance. Screen printed stickers are more vivid checking far away between indoor labels and outdoor vinyl stickers. After six months to a year outdoors, there is a big difference , Indoor labels‘ red and yellow will fade to white, leaving only blue and black. This is why outdoor stickers cost more than indoor ones.

Printing Operation & Machine Setup Skills
Multi-color alignment control
Four Key Points for Multi-Color Registering:
- Files require registration marks, with the size determined by the file and material, typically 0.15-0.3mm.
- All screen frames must keep the same tension.
- The registration points on the printing press platform must remain fixed.
- All four sides of the printing press platform feature micro-adjustable registration point regulators.
Large format sheet handling
Thickness large sheet material without printing problem. Here we talk about large vinyl car sticker sheets. Vinyl tends to shrink quickly, so it’s important to choose materials with a laminated backing, which won’t deform or shrink in a short period of time.
For other printing methods, once the plates and colors are properly adjusted beforehand, printing can proceed directly. Screen printing, however, requires continuous adjustments from start to finish.

Drying, Curing & Durability Control
Air drying vs oven drying vs UV curing
Air Drying: High ink viscosity, strong adhesion, and excellent temperature resistance. At temperatures around 10-40°C, natural drying with an electric fan requires 30-60 minutes. Only one fan is required, keeping costs low, but its solvent is highly volatile and emits VOCs.
Oven Drying: High-viscosity ink with excellent corrosion resistance. Bakes at high temperatures (150-180°C/266-350°F) for 30-60 minutes. Solvent volatilizes easily, resulting in VOC emissions. Requires a specialized oven.
UV Curing: Low-viscosity ink with excellent flow properties and a smooth, uniform surface. Cures under UV lamps at ambient to 60°C temperatures, requiring 10-30 seconds. Odorless. Requires specialized UV inks and curing equipment, resulting in higher costs.

Why Skills Matter More for Outdoor Labels
Outdoor stickers require different materials and inks depending on their intended use. Additionally, there is a significant disparity in quality between different brands. and it’s difficult to check the differences without experience. This is the main reason why some vehicle decals fade in 3-6months of outdoor exposure with low cost .
Outdoor materials all exhibit the property of thermal expansion and contraction.
So please take care of the detail for editing files, stenciling and registration during printing. Without expertise, you don’t know how to deal with this detail. Also that’s why small screen printing shops or individuals cannot do CMYK screen printing or multi-color registration. or printed stickers with color discrepancies, misaligned registration, white edges, or rough edges.
Therefore, for outdoor stickers, screen printing does not mean UV resistant and weatherproof.Instead, you must choose outdoor grade material and UV inks, with experience files edit, stenciling and printing high quality stickers ,which are UV resistant and waterproof for 3-5 years.
